Goseong-gun invites you to the "Land of Dinosaur" and the Home of "2006 Goseong World Dinosaur Expo"
Located at the southern part of Korean peninsula, more than 1,900 fossilized footprints of dinosaurs were found on the 6 km long coastal rock bed, which believed to be formed approximately 100 million years ago during the early and mid cretaceous period.
Along with Colorado, USA, and the west coast of Argentina, it is recognized as the World's Three largest Dinosaurs' Fossilized Footprints Site. Goseong-gun plans to host the 2006 Goseong World Dinosaur Expo to promote its academic value and beautiful natural environment to the world.
With the main theme of "Dinosaur, Earth and Mystery of Life", 2006 Goseong World Dinosaur Expo will take place from April 14 to June 4, for 52 days at Danghangpo tourist attraction, special event hall and Sangjokam Park. Major exhibitions including "Vision of Goseong, the Land of Dinosaur", and world's fossil, reptile, and various kinds of dinosaurs will take place at the Dinosaur Pavilion. Other activities are international exchange programs, symposiums, experiences on the Samjokam, exploration of dinosaur, play with dinosaurs and special events.
Unlike the bone fossil of dead dinosaur, fossilized footprints give us insights into the lives of dinosaurs.
Based on the fossilized footprints of 100 million years ago, it is possible to determine whether dinosaur moved in collective groups or alone.
Fossilized footprints of dinosaurs are important scientific evidence, which is impossible to find out with fossilized bones.
Thus, they are vital clues for uncovering the secrets of dinosaurs' age.
Before the grand opening of the Expo, Goseong-gun completed the construction of Dinosaurs Museum on August of 10th of last year to show the world of dinosaurs from 100 million years ago.
Dinosaur Museum is composed of basement and 3 story building with the total area of 3,400 ㎡. It has special exhibition halls for the Goseong footprints of dinosaurs, dinosaur park of cretaceous period, and dino land. The museum displays more than 96 pieces of fossil and skeletons of archaeornis, peterosaurus, apatosaurus, ankylosaurus, and Tyrannosaurus
There are also different kinds of halls for young students to experience the world of dinosaurs such as Theme Land with Dinosaurs, Story Telling, Puzzle of Bones and Game Land. Playground for children, bench, and footprints are built for the outdoor activities.
Iron made tower of Brachiosaurus with length of 34m, width of 8.7m and height of 24 m stands in front of the museum, symbolizing Goseong, the Land of Dinosaurs.
